Waning Moon in Taurus | August 10 – 18, 2020
by Sandra Bjorn Nicolaysen
A 4th Waning Quarter is a moment when you scale down your actions, expectations, and take things inwards rather than outwards. But with anything related to Astrology we have to take the complexity of each Cosmic moment into account.
The Last Quarter phase is a responsible and corrective phase. It is about completion, transition, reflection, and reorientation. This is a cycle when it’s best to take closing action. You will benefit from doing all follow-ups needed, and complete activities as the New Moon is inevitably the next phase.
In synthesis, this phase’s function is the manifestation of something that you have been working on. Action is essential. Either take a correcting action, or make the final push needed to realize a successful outcome. It’s also about taking responsibility for your choices and actions. You become aware of what is, and what is not working with respect to the achievement of your goals.
Let’s look at this week’s various planetary aspects as to tune in their opportunities and challenges.
This week starts with the Moon transiting Taurus, an Earth sign that requires that we deal with matters with a pragmatic mindset. The bottom line about the Moon in Taurus is about your safety and stability, but under this transit, you must learn to accept change as part of your life. Why is that? The Moon will meet Uranus later in the day which might bring about the need for you to review any fixed Taurus agenda. Like it or not, you will be called to make an adjustment – small or big – in order for you to keep your practical agenda on point.
If any unexpected event comes to the fore during this Moon & Uranus conjunction in Taurus, be reminded that your most successful action requires a shift from the conservative to the inventive and there is some risk involved in changing the structure, which you have built.
You should have no problem making the necessary adjustment since the Moon well knows by now due to her monthly encounter with Uranus, that Uranus presents a non-negotiable type of energy. The Moon in Taurus is willing to comply with Uranus’ unpredictable demands to get things done in a reasonable manner. Uranus will stay in Taurus until 2026, so we will be seeing this recurring Moon-Uranus conjunction every single month.
Mercury is moving so fast! It’s advancing two degrees per day. By the end of the day – still on August 10th – Mercury arrives at 10 degrees Leo and it’s going to Square the Moon and Uranus in Taurus. This is a tense encounter between fixed signs. We can assert that Mercury in Leo has a lot to do with finding self-respect, recognition for their ideas, narrative, and self-expression. When Mercury in Leo is confronted by the Moon and Uranus in Taurus, the basic problem is not to seek your own self-respect mistakenly in material things. Because Taurus is ruled by Venus, and Venus here is in her earthy representation, if you accept yourself for who you are, not for what you have or not have, it will become easier for you to find peace and tranquility of mind when Mercury in Leo and the Moon in Taurus meet is a Square between themselves, especially because they are vulnerable when they meet Uranus in a defiant aspect, such as the Square with Mercury, and the Conjunction with Moon, which is the case here.
Mercury rules the lower octave of the mind, negotiations, traveling, writing, signing papers. So, you may also be confronted by someone with an erratic authority which will be representative of Uranus and Moon in Taurus, who may try to disqualify, change, or defy your decisions, your plans, disturbing your thinking process. If you are the more mature type of person, you may just acknowledge the pattern and it will not affect you deeply. Or, in a more positive note, Uranus can bring a tone of awareness to any fixity related to your emotions (Moon in Taurus) or your thinking process, or fixed decision mankind style (Mercury in Leo). If you face some turbulence on these fronts you know what’s happening in the sky, and what the “intention” of the Cosmos herein is!
Mars at 21 degrees of Aries forms an exact Conjunction to Lilith at 21 degrees Aries. Isn’t it the right time to tame and hold your horses? Yes, it is! But what if you meet someone who is not to do the same?? Then, expect to be tested on your “coolness” these days. It’s funny how we can be poked, triggered by small provocations. It has a lot to do with our reptile brain responses. The reptile brain is located at the back of your skull where the head meets the spinal vertebrae. That’s where our instinctual nature, the fight, or flight decisions are placed. It is a very ancient brain structure that is responsible for our survival mode. Therefore, taking proper action when we are under threat is SUPER important. What you don’t want to do is to allow yourself to fall prey to foolish provocations that will lead you nowhere! Be mindful of how you react, and act accordingly to your higher self!
We have the 4th Quarter of the Moon, which is when the Moon is Waning towards the New Moon. This Last Quarter Moon occurs as the Moon in Taurus forms a Square to the Sun in Leo both at 19 degrees 28 minutes. The Last Quarter Moon phase may point to a crisis of consciousness because it is coming from the full awareness symbolized by the Full Moonlight that took place last week. It’s when we disperse that light and we are called to sort out what works for us and what doesn’t. This is also a preparation for the New Moon when we are preparing to give birth to something new once again.
The 4th Quarter Moon Phase is not the perfect time to start an important project, as the decreasing light of the Moon invites us to gradually descend into the inner world and complete tasks, and/or deal with emotions that need our immediate attention. Finishing cycles is just as important as starting new ones! Do you have unresolved matters that you should be taking care of? Have you recently experienced any interesting revelations that may help you take care of details related to any project which was conceived during any recent previous New Moons?
The 4th Quarter Square between the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Taurus highlights their fixed nature! They are both 4 legged animals, and they enjoy their stability. Their nature is to hold firm to their decisions no-matter-what! Determined and stubborn they are, one may say!
Let’s say that you have evolved and that you have developed some resilience, then what’s the meaning of this Moon phase for you? If you have made those adjustments when the Moon was conjunct Uranus, then this may be the moment when you undergo a reality check regarding your decisions. Fixed Signs tend to make decisions that will last for a while, or even last for a long time, depending on the quality and nature of the decision that has been made. You will likely have to deal with the consequences of the decisions that you make during this Square between the Moon in Taurus and Sun in Leo, be aware of that. This is indeed an excellent moment for solid decision making, but not so much to start or launch a major project! Keep working on those precious details (Taurus & Leo) for a little longer, once the decision is made, and wait for a better moment to launch any new endeavor, even if it is a consolidation of an important relationship, personal or business-oriented.
The Moon in Taurus will trine Jupiter in Capricorn during the evening and will also trine Pluto in Capricorn at around midnight when Tuesday merges into Wednesday. You may find yourself taking care of business and speaking to people in power by the end of the day on August 11th, right after the 4th Square comes to an exact square between the Moon and the Sun. The dynamics between Taurus, Leo, and Capricorn is very self-oriented: my values, my property, my self-expression, my public image, my investments, my career, my status, my solid reputation! These themes are all highlighted here!
Venus has made a smooth entry in Cancer and it is not being challenged by any super hard aspect yet, as she is still at 4 degrees, not having to face the Capricorn Stellium at this early degree. She will Square Chiron at 9 degrees Aries, yes! She is moving 1 degree a day and coming to an interesting Sextile to Uranus on August 19th which will male her cope with the Square to Chiron. I am sure you are feeling that the presence of Venus in Cancer this time around is being anchored by a more self-centered outlook because Mercury is in Leo. You may even be strategically planning your next move after this Waning Moon in Taurus lent you the gift of patience and the vision of long term goals.
The dance between Mercury in a fire sign and Venus in a water sign may display and interesting creative expression of your personality, taking into consideration that you are not being dragged by those hard Mars aspects going on simultaneously which could be consuming the beauty of Mercury in Leo, and smashing the feeling nature of Venus in Cancer. Astrological awareness is key to our Emotional Intelligence, isn’t it????
By the evening, the Moon moves into Gemini.
The Moon has moved to Gemini and it remains there until late night on Friday. We may expect this Gemini Moon to be happening at the same moment when Mars in Aries is forming an exact square to Pluto in Capricorn. If something major takes place during this planetary configuration, for you or for the collective, we may expect to receive scattered information coming from different sources, which may make it really hard to sort out what is real, what is not. On August 14th, the Moon in Gemini Squares Neptune, which has the potential to shed even more confusion to an existing confusing situation.
On a more personal note, you may be misusing words to describe something, due to a lack of proper or precise information. You may also be asking yourself if you have clarity about your current motivations. Remember that this is also a waning Moon Cycle, where the 4th Square between the Moon in Taurus and Sun in Leo is good for decision making, but as the Moon moves into the volatile mutable Gemini and forms a square to Neptune retrograde in Pisces, it can again push you back into indecision even after you seemed to have made a decision. You may also come across someone not telling you the truth about something, so you better wait for the Moon to come out of that Square to Neptune to make a decision.
As with any Square, the opportunity equals the challenges, and your ability to play at the core of who you really are will help you see the transformational forces behind the Square, and this will help you use the challenge of this aspect towards more creative expressions.
I also call your attention to the fact that Uranus has been Stationary from the Earth’s perspective point in the Solar System since July 5th, and will turn retrograde next Sunday, August 16th when it then goes into retrogration, still on the 10th degree of Taurus where it will remain at that same degree until September 26th, 2020.
We should pay close attention to any Natal Planets placed between 6 to 14 degrees of any Fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius because Uranus is willing to “play” disruption games with them. Anything inconvenient that happens under the transits of Uranus tests your ability to withstand disruption and adapt to the new that is pushing and forging the new and unknown. It can be quite liberating despite the fact that any disruption can be very troubling and annoying. Ah! Be sure to take note that Uranus will retrograde all the way back to 6 degrees of Taurus by February 8th, 2021 and then it will turn direct and will pass by this current degree (10 Taurus) on April 19th, 2021. This is a LONG cycle and it needs your close attention.
Mars spent most of last week in a Square to Jupiter at 19 degrees of Capricorn. And by Friday, August 14th, it will Square Pluto. Honestly, I can’t be too positive about the effects of this Square because its nature is belligerent from both ends. There are no compromising forces here. So, yes, be super careful! Explosions may occur. Tantrums! Wars! Riots may explode! Serious litigations can take place, which may erupt from a deteriorated situation. When a Square is formed, a 90-degree angle, there is a blind spot at the core of the angle, even if you know the rules of the game. Let’s say you know how to play by the rules of the game, but you have no control of the cards or the elements that are being thrown at you. That’s the threat here between Mars and Pluto in a Square!
The Moon in Gemini meets the North Node at 27 degrees of Gemini, seeding the soul with new ideas, new information, and maybe even new connections. This lovely encounter happens late, as the night reaches its darkest hours.
By Friday, the Moon will be in Cancer and will join Venus in the morning hours. Emotional energies may find an interesting outlet for a full expression. If you are in need of some emotional healing try massage, aromatherapy, smooth yoga, dancing, something that appeals to your senses since Venus and Moon are both so feminine and they are embracing each other in a nurturing conjunct aspect. This adds a soothing note to Mars in Square to Pluto which is still exact and potent.
It is expected that if you have planets close to 6 degrees of Cancer you will receive extra protection from this Venus and Moon Conjunction. This is also valid for planets in all other water signs which are placed from 4 to 8 degrees of Pisces and Scorpio, because they will be receiving a harmonious Trine from that Venus – Moon Conjunction.
On Sunday, the Moon will travel through Cancer until it starts facing that tall barrier composed by Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn. Hopefully, your feeling nature has developed some consistency and you are ready to undergo that encounter with a steady heart, and no drama. It’s during these transits, when our most sensitive feelings are tested when our support system is so valuable. We call upon our inner strength, we call upon people that support us, and we offer them unconditional support in return. It’s important to note that Saturn can also be protective as long as it has built those solid foundations.
The opposition between the Moon and Pluto is a fertile field for strong emotional release. The more mature and wise you are – and I am not talking about age -, the more you will be able to cope with whatever feelings may come up at this time.
Watch! The Moon’s light is still fading away…
Monday, Mercury in Leo will be completely combusted by the Sun in Leo. Combustion of a planet is a phenomenon which is said to be caused when such a planet comes within certain degrees of closeness to the Sun. When it happens, the planet which has come closer to the Sun may become comparatively weaker as the Sun may burn some of its strength out. Mercury can even be considered combusted by the Sun up to 10 degrees apart. This is such an invitation to exercise being low profile, in the midst of such a strong Leo fiery energy. Just be mindful and calibrate your ego energy!
By midday, the Moon enters Leo and it’s going to Square Uranus again, as it did when the Moon was in Taurus forming the 4th Quarter Square. This is happening around midnight when Monday is morphing into Tuesday. Now, we see that each Moon phase is composed of 7 days.
Tuesday, August 18th hosts a New Moon phase, and a super-powerful Conjunction between the Sun, the Moon, and Mercury at 25 degrees of Leo, and it will be time for another Lunar Planner.
Sending you many blessings!
