There is quite the party of planets going on in Pisces, the sign of both bliss and insanity, of ecstasy and liberation to despair and imprisonment. And the most challenging part of Pisces is the feeling of not having any say in the matter. It is what it is, and there is nothing to do about it. Pisces, the 12th sign, is comparable to being in the womb of life itself, the vast oceanic cosmos that we are living in. Some of us may faulty think that we live on the outside of it, being separate from all life around us, but even if one thinks like this, it doesn’t really change the fact that it is still not true. We are all a part of this cosmos. All a part of nature. And in that sense, we are miniscule. The vastness of life is somewhat incomprehensible, and for this New Moon, Ceres, Sun, Moon, Saturn, Mercury, North Node, and Neptune are all in Pisces, pulling us into the complexity of the surreal, overwhelming experience that is Pisces.
This can be too much for some. Fantasy and reality can get confused, staying afloat can feel incredibly difficult, and the punctuation of one’s personal will can render us feeling helpless and overpowered. But being conscious of it can, on the other hand, prove to be quite useful. The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon provides helpful guidance on navigating such confusing waters: «An aviator pursues his journey, flying through ground-obscuring clouds» and then we observe: «Explorations into transcendental consciousness offer breakthroughs of perception.»
The New Moon, albeit a slightly difficult lunation due to the lack of boundaries and the dismaying sense of overwhelm, is square Jupiter in Gemini. This is a mixture of the archetypal realms of Neptune, Jupiter, and Mercury, which, on one side of the spectrum, can produce some of the most bipolar expressions of nature ever, and on the other hand, it can also provide an opportunity for the mystical, transcendent state of seeing through the illusory nature of everything. What seemingly goes on doesn’t necessarily happen, and for the aviator, capable of flying higher, the landscape will be visible, but the details won’t. From space none of us are visible. Only the earth is visible. Then there is one planet.
To see us as living on one planet can, for some, have the odd effect of dehumanizing others, but it can also give birth to a vision of oneness and compassion. When we see everything from above, we see how we are all trying to survive. The enlightened mind realizes how difficult it is for any human to overcome the separatistic and instinctual nature of the body. We are basically still living in a jungle, trying to be as happy as we can while awaiting death and fearing pain. For the Buddhists the first truth is: Everything is suffering. The second truth is: There is freedom from suffering. And one basic principle to get there is mindfulness. To become the observer, or as Elsie Wheeler, the psychic who formulated the 360 Sabian Symbols, calls it: The Aviator.
From an astrological perspective we can observe that just after the New Moon, Venus, currently residing in Aries, will be retrograde. And some days after the first eclipse of the year, March 14, Mercury will join, beginning the retrograde motion in Aries just one degree from Venus. All this is part of the New Moon, as any New Moon is an energy-building phase, and right now, this is the celestial backdrop for the lunation.
Mars, finally out of retrograde motion, will continue to stay in a square to Chiron, fueling a dimension of hurt, anger and suffering that comes with being stuck, in powerlessness, and being treated as an object by outside powers. We might fight left and right, hoping that something will work, not even sure what we are fighting. It could be politics, it could be people in our lives, it could be our perceived smallness. And sometimes fighting is what we need to do, but in this case, with the sign of Aries being the grounds of the retrograde phases of both Venus and Mercury, and Mars trotting through security seeking Cancer squared by Chiron in Aries, fighting might be pure self-harm. Maybe being the aviator might finally give you the peace of mind you are looking for? The aviator in you will see what fights are worth fighting.
If you see people around you go into full hyper Pisces-Gemini-Jupiter mode right now, unable to sort themselves out, unable to distinguish what is real and what is fantasy, you might not be able to do anything to help them other than providing grounded energy. This is a time to apply wisdom. Wisdom will help you see through the madness and see the root cause of all the anger. This will soften your heart in a difficult time. It is time to be the aviator and fly higher.
