Whether it is a chicken breaking out of its egg, a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, or a baby being born, the birthing process is an initiation into a new state of being/existence. It requires focus, will, strength, endurance, and a particular caution based on wisdom. Such are the times we occupy at this moment of earth history. The new Moon sets an overtone for this month’s lunar cycle, and this image offers us powerful insights into the underlying processes at work in ourselves and our world. It can be helpful during these times to remember that whenever we are faced with a tremendous new threat or challenge, the spiritual world always provides us with new capacities to surmount the obstacles. At the onset, these capacities are unrealized until, with exercise and application, they become consciously known and integrated into a new identity.

We don’t know how to crawl until we do, we don’t know how to walk or talk until we find ourselves walking and talking, and we don’t know how to love until we find ourselves opening our hearts to another. Breaking through past limitations to scale new heights of self-expression requires courage as we simply don’t know what we’re doing, and we need to do it anyway. Like the first time riding a horse or a bicycle, it’s necessary to overcome our fears and insecurities, mount, and ride. Only after we are moving forward, propelled in a new manner, that we realize we have done it. This month, and the next few that lie ahead, will ask each of us to take off the training wheels and ride. Learn by doing.

The stage is set with this new Moon occurring as part of a T-Square, opposing Mars and his sister Eris while squaring Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto. We may feel like hardened steel being forged and beaten by the hammer of the great blacksmith into magnificent swords of truth. Being almost constantly bombarded with bullshit (South Node in Sag), it is incumbent upon us to decipher, with perhaps latent intuitive skills, just what is true and what to think, say, and do. The stars tell us that breaking through will require challenging the norm, butting up against any established systems and external authorities founded upon old, outmoded ignorance and blatant lies. We’ll need to sharpen our swords of perception to separate the wheat from the chaff.

We go into this lunar cycle with both Mercury and Mars retrograde, indicating the need for each of us to personalize our truth, discover and give power to our own unique expression, and open our hearts and minds in new ways that may differ from the norm. The Sun will progress into Scorpio’s alchemical world of transformation and oppose Uranus/Prometheus, the light-bearer. By the end of the cycle, both Mercury and Mars will have gone direct, and Jupiter will have transited Pluto to begin a new twelve plus year cycle.
